We Discovered Libraries Don’t Recognise Some ISBNs — Here’s Why That Surprised Us and What It Means for Our Anthology

What I learned about ISBN’s today while researching for my local Write Friends group in Albury.

1️⃣ Our Question

Today we hit a surprise while researching ISBNs for our anthology: some libraries don’t recognise Amazon-issued numbers. Wait… what?! That meant our careful planning might not reach libraries at all. I needed to understand why this was happening and what we should do about it.

2️⃣ What I Found

  • Amazon ISBNs: Free and tied to Amazon’s platform. Convenient, but not universal.
  • Library preference: Many library systems prefer publisher-owned ISBNs. If you only use Amazon’s, your book might not appear in their catalogue.
  • Impact: If libraries can’t catalogue our anthology properly, it limits discoverability and may affect professional credibility for the authors involved.

3️⃣ Why It Matters

  • Libraries may not include our anthology in their catalogue if ISBNs aren’t handled carefully.
  • Limits reach beyond online retailers — some readers rely on library access.
  • Could make our anthology harder to track and reference long-term.

And, on a personal note, while I was researching ISBNs for my writing group’s anthology, I stumbled across my own book in WorldCat and was thrilled:

“We checked WorldCat — and there it was: my Ayana book, live in library records! This confirmed why ISBN choices really matter for discoverability.”

Even though it feels like a small technical detail, ISBN choice can have a big effect on where books actually appear.

4️⃣ What I’m Doing Now

We’re going to research purchasing our own ISBNs before publishing. That way, libraries will recognise the anthology properly and it will be easier to track distribution outside Amazon.

Publishing isn’t just about following rules — sometimes it’s about noticing surprises and figuring them out as you go.

5️⃣ One Takeaway

If you want library distribution, don’t assume a free ISBN works every time/everywhere.
