Writing Advice ~ My Three favorite Authors …

The Authors Who Inspire Me: A Journey Through Fiction and Insight

When it comes to reading, I have a handful of authors whose work has profoundly influenced my writing and thinking. These writers not only shape my stories but also fuel my curiosity and creative energy.

If you’re looking for some literary inspiration or writing advice, here are my top favorites so far:

Jean M. Auel – Master of Prehistoric Fiction

Jean M. Auel’s Earth’s Children series is a masterpiece of prehistoric fiction. Her vivid storytelling, rich in historical detail, takes readers on a journey through a time before written language. Auel’s ability to bring the past to life with such depth and authenticity has inspired me to think about the power of setting and world-building. If you haven’t yet, check out The Clan of the Cave Bear for an unforgettable experience.

Stephen Donaldson – The Dark and Gripping World of Fantasy

Stephen Donaldson’s The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant captivated me with its unique protagonist, a deeply flawed antihero who’s thrust into a fantastical world. Donaldson’s intricate world-building and psychological depth make his work stand out in the fantasy genre. His ability to weave complex themes of morality, power, and redemption continues to inspire me as I develop my own characters and narratives.

Stephen King – The King of Psychological Horror

No list would be complete without Stephen King. His ability to blend the supernatural with the deeply human experience is unparalleled. Whether it’s the terror in The Shining or the emotional rollercoaster in It, King captures both fear and vulnerability in ways that make his stories both thrilling and thought-provoking. His writing style is so conversational and accessible, which is something I always strive for in my own work.

I also like that Stephen King shares writing advice in his book, On Writing.

Thinking Outside the Box: Seth Godin’s Unique Approach to Business and Creativity

When it comes to thinking outside the box, no one does it better than Seth Godin. His blogs and books challenge conventional thinking and encourage me to approach both writing and business with a fresh perspective. Whether it’s his thoughts on marketing, creativity, or leadership, Godin’s insights are always thought-provoking and applicable to both personal and professional growth.

  1. Love Jean Auel. She inspired me to write a paleohistoric series that a publisher told me to update to present day (totally changed the story as you might imagine) and I found an agent for. I'd prefer to write paleohistoric stories as Auel does but I guess I'll have to wait until I have some leverage.

  2. Or, just do it anyway and have it ready for the right moment. Everything changes over time and often it simply changes back.

Paleohistoric will be the IN THING again before long. Just waiting for all the vampires and zombies to go back from whence they came! 🙂

    Cheers, Zak.
