Creative Writing ~ Use Your Power, of Adaptability, in Your Creative Writing
– Use Your Words, it’s Creative Writing!
As writers, it’s quite easy to settle into a familiar routine or groove. We find a comfortable niche in terms of style, genre, and tone that feels like a second skin.
So, we stick with it. We cling to it no matter what. It’s a pattern observed in many writers, whether seasoned veterans or enthusiastic beginners.
But the true essence of writing, the real journey of a writer, lies in the ability to evolve.
This evolution isn’t just about what we write, it encompasses the methodology and approach we take towards our writing. The world around us is in a constant state of change, and our writing should reflect that dynamism.
Adapting as a creative writer means more than just chasing trends or switching genres on a whim. It’s about a deeper understanding of the craft and a willingness to challenge oneself.
Here are some strategies to help you stay adaptable and fresh in your creative writing journey:
Creative Writing ~ Explore new genres and styles
It’s so easy to fall into a routine of writing within the same genre or style. I love to write thrillers. However, exploring new forms of writing can do wonders for my creativity.
If you primarily write fiction, try writing a blog post or article. If you typically write in the third person, experiment with first-person or second-person narration. You might surprise yourself with what you’re capable of.
Creative Writing ~ Embrace change
Change can be uncomfortable, but it’s essential for your writing growth.
This could mean challenging yourself to write within a shorter timeframe, experimenting with new writing software, or simply trying a different writing spot.
Embracing these changes can help break down creative barriers and open your mind to new possibilities.
Creative Writing ~ Build a creative writing community
Writing can be a solitary journey, but it doesn’t have to be. I have been a member and coordinator of a local writing group for over twenty years. Yep, I can officially call myself old- old now 😉
Surrounding yourself with other writers can provide a sense of accountability and motivation to keep pushing forward.
Joining a writing group or taking a writing class can help you connect with fellow writers and receive constructive feedback on your work.
Creative Writing ~ Always be willing to learn
No matter how experienced you are as a writer, there’s always room to learn and improve.
The world is your ultimate sourcebook. Stay informed about current events, trends, and social changes. Let your curiosity lead you to new ideas and concepts that can be woven into your writing.
Read books on writing, attend workshops or conferences, or work with a writing coach. All these things can help you gain new insights and elevate your craft.
In Albury Wodonga, we’re incredibly lucky to have the annual Write Around the Murray Writer’s Festival. It’s like a banquet of literary delights, offering an amazing array of writing-related topics, both in person and online.
Every year this gem of an event comes our way, growing more fabulous and expansive. It’s a real treat for anyone passionate about writing.
At the heart of what I am trying to say is, that being an adaptable writer means taking risks, trying new things, and being open to change. It’s all about embracing the thrill of the unknown. It’s like stepping out onto a stage, not knowing what the audience will think, but being excited for the performance anyway.
The nerves are with you but you leap regardless.
Taking risks in your writing isn’t just about being bold; it’s about exploring uncharted territories of your creativity. Picture yourself as an adventurer, charting new courses in the vast ocean of literature.
I would love to see this change in film and television. As an audience, most of us know that the writing is written according to a method, almost a recipe, and sadly that gets very boring for us as an audience.
Your imagination is a divine gift, unique and entirely your own.
Embrace this truth: your imagination is exclusively yours, a treasure bestowed upon you. It’s a gift to be nurtured and cherished. Be cautious about sharing your creative ideas and stories prematurely. Keep them close, like a songwriter who waits until their song is fully realized before unveiling it to the world.
In this era of Artificial Intelligence, don’t let the speed and capabilities of AI intimidate you.
Remember, AI can only replicate what already exists; it lacks the spark of originality that you possess. If you have a unique idea, a flash of original thought, hold it dear and develop it. Let it grow and mature in your creative space. When it’s fully formed and you feel a sense of satisfaction with it, that’s when it’s ready to be shared with the world.
This journey of creation is about exploration and experimentation.
It’s about venturing into genres and styles you never imagined you’d explore, discovering novel ways to articulate familiar concepts, or even flipping your established ideas on their head. Your creative process is a personal and sacred path, filled with opportunities for growth and innovation.
Cherish it and let your unique voice shine through.
